If you run a local service business in the UK, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is arguably your most powerful marketing tool — and most businesses are getting it completely wrong.
When someone searches “plumber near me” or “best electrician in Manchester,” Google doesn’t show a website first. It shows a map. Specifically, it shows the Local Pack — three businesses displayed with their ratings, hours, and contact details. If you’re not in that box, you’re invisible to the vast majority of ready-to-buy customers.
So what’s going wrong? Here are the most common GBP mistakes we see every week:
1. Incomplete or outdated information
A surprising number of businesses still have wrong phone numbers, old addresses, or missing opening hours listed on their profile. Google rewards completeness. If your profile looks half-finished, it won’t rank — and customers won’t trust it.
2. Zero reviews (or worse, no responses)
Reviews are one of Google’s most important local ranking signals. Not asking for them is a missed opportunity. But equally damaging is ignoring the reviews you already have. Responding to every review — positive or negative — shows Google and potential customers that you’re an active, credible business.
3. No posts or photos
Google lets you publish updates, offers, and photos directly on your profile. Most businesses never touch this feature. Regular posts signal to Google that your business is active and relevant, which directly impacts how often you appear in searches.
4. Wrong business category
Your primary category tells Google what your business does. Choosing the wrong one — or a too-generic one — can push you out of searches you should be winning. Specificity matters.
The fix
Start by auditing your profile today. Check every field is accurate and complete. Then build a simple system: ask every happy customer for a review, post an update once a week, and add fresh photos monthly. These small habits compound into serious visibility over time.
